What is a cold plunge?

A cold plunge is a short, full-body immersion in chilled water, typically between 39°F and 55°F. Most sessions last one to three minutes. It's sometimes called an ice bath, cold water immersion, or CWI.

The appeal is the contrast. Cold constricts blood vessels; heat dilates them. Alternating between the two is the basis of contrast therapy, a practice used in athletic recovery for decades and now widely adopted for general wellness.

Our cold plunge setup

Water temperature: we hold our tubs in the mid-40s. Depending on the day and use, they run between 39°F and 50°F. We don't warm them up for comfort — the cold is the point.

Two tubs, so you're rarely waiting, and one bather per tub.

Continuously filtered and sanitized. The water is circulating and treated at all times.

Natural light. Our contrast suite has large windows, which is unusual for a recovery space. Daytime sessions get real sunlight. After dark the room shifts to colored lighting.

Shared suite, capped at 8 guests. The dry sauna comfortably seats about 12 and the infrared sauna about 6, so even at capacity there's room to move.

How a contrast therapy session works

A typical 60-minute session at Deliberate runs three rounds:

  1. Cold plunge, 1–3 minutes. Get in, breathe, stay as still as you can.

  2. Sauna, about 15 minutes. Traditional dry sauna at 185–195°F, or infrared at 130–150°F.

  3. Rest and hydrate. Let your body settle before going again.

  4. Repeat two more times.

Nothing here is mandatory. Some people plunge once and spend the rest of the hour in the sauna. Some skip the heat entirely. The rotation is a starting point, not a rule.

What cold plunge may support

Research on cold water immersion is active and still developing. Commonly reported effects include:

  • Reduced perception of muscle soreness after training

  • A short-term increase in alertness and mood

  • Circulatory response from repeated vasoconstriction and vasodilation

  • Improved tolerance for physical discomfort over time

Your first cold plunge

Start shorter than you think. Sixty to ninety seconds is a complete first session.

Control your breathing. The initial gasp is a reflex. Slow, long exhales settle it within about twenty seconds.

Stay still. Moving disrupts the thin layer of slightly warmer water against your skin and makes it feel colder.

Don't chase a number. Time in the water matters less than consistency over weeks.

Go cold first, then hot, if you're doing both. Most people find it more comfortable in that order.

Talk to your doctor before cold plunging if you're pregnant or have a cardiovascular condition, uncontrolled blood pressure, a seizure disorder, or Raynaud's.
