INSIDE THE HYPERPOD: WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR FIST MILD HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY SESSION

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to try a hyperbaric oxygen therapy session, you’re not alone. Trying something new can feel intimidating, so we want to break down the entire experience and answer some commonly-asked questions so that you feel comfortable prior to your first session.

The good news? Mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy is safe, comfortable, and surprisingly relaxing. Sessions are designed to give your body the fuel it needs to heal, recover, and recharge at its best.

Step 1: Arrival & Preparation

We recommend arriving to your session hydrated from the day before. Most clients use the restroom prior to beginning their session as the session lasts 60 mins. Besides that, there is not any specific preparation needed before your session. Simply wear comfortable clothing (something you might wear to lounge in at home). Shoes come off before entering and some clients like to bring an extra pillow or blanket if they get cold easily. There is an air-conditioning setting that can be adjusted or turned off for comfort.

Step 2: Getting Settled in the Hyperpod

Once checked in, our staff will walk you through the entire process and explain features of the chamber. You don’t need to remember or do anything - it is just for your peace of mind.

Because this is a mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber, you’re welcome to bring in a laptop, iPad, phone or headphones to use during your session. This isn’t possible in all hyperbaric chambers, but the Hyperpod allows it since it doesn’t reach 100% oxygen saturation in the ambient chamber.

Step 3: During the Session

A typical session will last 60 minutes. As our staff begins your session and the chamber pressurizes, you’ll likely feel a gentle popping in your ears, similar to what you feel on an airplane at takeoff. This is normal and will typically subside within 5-10 minutes as your body adjusts.

Once pressurized, you’ll breathe concentrated oxygen at a slightly higher pressure than normal atmospheric conditions. Most clients describe the experience as calming and restorative with plenty of time to relax, read, nap or simply breathe deeply.

Step 4: Ending the Session

Just as the staff started the session, they will also end the session. As the session ends, the chamber will depressurize slowly - again, much like descending from a flight. If at any point you feel discomfort in your ears, you can request to pause or stop the session. Our staff will be close by to assist you.

Step 5: Aftercare and What to Expect

After your first session, many clients feel refreshed, mentally clear, and energized. Some notice improvements in focus, deeper sleep, or an overall sense of well-being. Occasionally, mild ear or sinus pressure may occur - a normal effect from the change in pressure.

Keep in mind: multiple sessions may be needed to notice significant improvements. We recommend consulting with your primary care provider for guidance on the total number of sessions best for you.
